Ten Things To Take On A Mountain Bike Ride

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEK2oYpCTpM
There are a few things that you should always take when you go riding. Whether its water, some simple tools or that vital spare pair of socks in your car, these are GMBN’s top ten things to always take on a Mountain Bike Ride.

Subscribe to GMBN: http://gmbn.eu/subscribe
Get exclusive GMBN gear in the GMBN store! http://gmbn.eu/qi

A car boot kit that always stays in the back of my car. That includes a track pump. It’s obviously much quicker than using a mini pump. I’ve got tools that you probably wouldn’t want to carry out on the trail so a shock pump, one of these Topeak kits with a slightly bigger range of tools in there, some chain lube, and there’s also a mini pump. Any sort of bits and bobs that you might need like spare cleats. Then, I’ve got a tube. I actually take a 27.5 Presta ’cause that’ll fit in, basically, anything. Some spare clothes, t-shirts, in case I get wet. Then I’ve got a towel just to wipe myself down, just a small one there. Spare socks, take them everywhere I go.

Whether it’s a fast blast or a longer ride at a trail centre, you definitely wanna go with some spare parts. We tend to put these inside our hydration packs and just leave them in there. Always carry a quality little mini pump. Some riders like to carry CO2 cartridges but they’re a bit wasteful unless you’re racing. Definitely carry a spare inner tube or two. We recommend carrying a Presta valve ’cause that’ll fit any rim drilling and make it a 27 1/2 inch because it’ll fit 29 and 26 inch wheels too. Couple of tyre levers, always a great idea. Decent multi tool, make sure that your multi tool has a chain splitter on it because that’s gonna happen time to time. Always a good idea to take some cable ties because you can fix most sorts of things with those. We also like to keep some gear inner cables with us.

Water. Now, some people prefer to carry a hydration pack with a bladder inside. I, actually, generally prefer to use a water bottle and a bottle cage on my bike. But that’s only 600 ml so if I’m going for a bigger ride, I will resort to using a riding pack.

Pile of loose change. Perfect for the car park and getting the cheeky coffee on the way out. Number Five:
Riding kit. Definitely need some good quality padded shorts, faithful GMBN jersey, and, riding in the UK or anywhere else in Europe, probably a decent waterproof jacket just to stash in that pack.

Food. Now, it’s always quite nice to have something on you just in case you need it. But, especially for those bigger rides, you’re going to need to fuel them properly. Fruit and nuts are a great idea. Also, you could use sport specific things like gels, you’ve got tabs that can go in your drink, and also a recovery drink for after is a pretty good idea.

Protection. So, of course at the very least, you’re gonna need a good mountain bike helmet. Obviously, the better quality, the better it is for your head. And also pick a helmet that’s suitable for the type of riding you do. So this is a trail helmet and it comes down lower at the back of your head to give you that bit more protection. Pads, so you can think about knee pads and elbow pads. Again, appropriate for the type of riding you do. And also eyewear, especially important if you’re riding in wet conditions. Stop anything getting in your eyes and potentially damaging your eyeballs.

Always take your phone with you as well. Obviously for safety reasons if you need to ring anyone. Good for taking videos, taking a picture of your bike for Bike Vault on the Dirt Shed Show. And of course, keep it nice and safe and waterproof in one of our little pocpacs.

Take a riding buddy with you. Of course, riding by yourself is fun but it can be more fun using your limits with someone else and, of course, it’s much safer.

How To Swap Hydraulic Brake Hoses | MTB Maintenance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzlOIhcBkak
On occasion, you may need to swap your brake hoses over. One thing to bear in mind though, if you’re not confident with hydraulics, definitely speak to your local bike shop. We’re using Shimano brakes because they’re are right and left specific, unlike Sram or Avid brakes, where you can swap the whole lever over. This is a quick and easy process just to swap your hoses over, if you’re careful about it, you won’t need to do a full brake bleed. To swap the hoses, you’re gonna need to an 8mm open ended spanner, you’ll need a 2 1/2mm allen key or hex wrench, you need a 4mm allen key or hex wrench, you need the Shimano bleeding funnel with the plunger, you need some mineral fluid, a rag and some kind of cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Importantly, you want to make sure that if any oil does drip from the brake levers in the process, it can’t get on your front disc rotor. So firstly level off the brake levers so they’re horizontal, this will be clear later. You then need to remove the rubber boot on the lever, that’s covering the hose connector. Now get your 8mm open ended spanner and undo this hose connector. Then your next step is to remove the hose from the lever. When you do this, it’s give it a firm tug, to release the olive which is set into the lever. As you pull it out, you might lose a bit of fluid but be as delicate as you can. For this stage, it’s vital to not touch the brake lever. If you operate the brake lever in anyway, you’re gonna lose fluid and that means you’re gonna have to do a full brake bleed. So when my front brake lever is separated from the hose, repeat the same process with the back brake lever, then reconnect those brake hoses into the levers in the reverse process of taking the hoses out the levers. Make sure that the olive sits home, you’ll feel it slightly click into place. Then tighten your hose connector back up with your 8mm open ended spanner and replace the rubber boot. We’re gonna take the Shimano funnel bleeding tool and a 2 1/2mm allen key. As you remove the 2 1/2mm allen bolt. With the funnel in place on the top of the lever and a small amount of oil inside there, your lever is actually open so air can travel out. Gently squeeze the lever a few times and you may or may not see some air bubbles rise to the surface. While the brake lever is pulled to the bar, gently tap the hose as well, all the way along to the actual lever, just to help any air bubbles travel along, that maybe in there. At the end of the process, you need to put the plug into the funnel and carefully remove the funnel from the lever. Now that I’ve put the 2 1/2mm top cap bolt back in place, we just to check everything works. Make sure you give the brake levers and handlebar area, a good wipe down with some brake cleaner or some isopropyl alcohol, just to make sure any residue of oil is removed. You’re at the end of task now, don’t forget to just reset your brake levers to a preferred angle, good to go and hit the trails.
