If you’re riding gravity trails such as Whistler Bike Park regularly, you’re dramatically increasing your exposure to having a large mechanical such as smashing up a rear mech! But that’s mountain biking and once every now and then, it happens! In this video Doddy shows you how a broken mech doesn’t have to mean the end of your day’s riding!

That’s right…we’re going chainless! There are several advantages to practicing chainless such as learning to brake less and harder when you need to, carrying more speed, pumping obstacles and finding flow. However, in the event of disaster and a broken rear mech, you can remove it in order to continue your days riding! Here’s how:

Remove the chain
Same as always here! If you’ve got a Sram drivetrain (or a brand new Shimano one) you can use the split link to break the chain and remove it from the bike. If you’re running a Shimano one then split it with your multi-tools chain tool. If you don’t have a multi tool on you then ask around! You’re at a bike park after all! Stash it in your pocket or your pack. You can re-attach it later on!

Cables
Click through your gears until you’re in your highest and there’s no tension on the cable. Then, undo the cable at the fastening bolt, you can potentially re-use it later so try to avoid cutting it or fraying it if it’s undamaged. Now pull a bit of your cable through the front of the bike so that it sits away from the spinning rear wheel and anywhere it could get caught up!

Rear Mech
The only thing left to do now is to remove the rear derailleur! Take the tension off of the spring either with your hand (Shimano and others) or by using the cage-lock (Sram). Then remove the rear derailleur by unscrewing the fixing bolt with either a 5mm Allen key or a T25 Torx, depending on your brand.

And there you go…you’re chainless now. Worry about replacing your mech at a different time and keep hitting laps of the park! It’s much better than not riding and you never know…you might actually get faster!

No matter how much regular maintenance you do, something will just happen! Snapping a chain, breaking a gear cable or getting a flat, these things happen! So be prepared for the worst by learning these hacks and maybe adding a few simple items to your trail pack!

Pre-ride Checks
One of the most important steps in addressing mechanical issues out on trail is prevention! Some accidents such as damage caused by crashes, snapped chains or gear cables is impossible to predict or prevent, but if you crash because your stem wasn’t tight, well, you’re making problems for yourself!

Snapping a Gear Cable
Breaking your gear cable leaves your gears out of action. A gear cable isn’t something that is frequently carried by riders but we’ve got a top hack that means you don’t have to! Most of us would limp home in our hardest gear, walk or use the limit screws to maybe achieve 2nd or 3rd down the block. However, Doddy’s got an awesome trick that allows you to select whichever gear you’d like and ride home in a manageable singlespeed!

Bent rotor
Some components are easily damaged. Many people bend or buckle disc rotors in crashes or on rocks out on trail. You’re never going to get it perfect but this is hacks to get you home after all! Doddy’s got a great hack to make that buckle a bit smaller as none of us carry around a pair of pliers just in case!

Tyre Tear
Punctures are fairly common, but a slash in the sidewall can stop you in your tracks and prevent repair, even with a tube! In order to address this you can use a tyre boot. Essentially a massive puncture repair patch for the inside of a tyre! This will allow you to inflate a tube inside the tyre whilst the boot bridges the tear. You will need a new tyre, this isn’t a repair that will last, but at least you can ride home! if you don’t have a boot with you then improvise! We’ve seen currency, huge leaves, even another section of tyre used on hacks and bodges!

From bolts rattling loose to wheels becoming buckled, there are several things to watch out for on your bike if you’re smashing laps on the harsh terrain of bike parks every day!

Wheels
Tyres, rims and spokes, they all need to be working together to keep the hole thing rolling! Check for slashes in the tires, work your way around the wheel checking that spoke tension is even, then do the same looking for dings in the rim. Nip up any loose spokes, replace tires as necessary and keep an eye on any dings in the rim to make sure they don’t get worse! Finally, make sure your rotor bolts are tight and your axles are secure.

Frame
The frame of the bike needs to be structurally secure at all times. Check for cracks along vital welds or stress points such as the headtube, bottom bracket and rear triangle. Check all the pivot bolts are tight and that there is no unknown play in the frame!

Cockpit
It’s really important that your contact points are going to remain in contact with the bike! Check grips/lock on’s are tight and that bar end plugs are in. Check the headset for play and adjust accordingly. Bolt check the bar and stem bolts to make sure they’re tight enough. If you don’t have a torque wrench then use your common sense to make sure you don’t over-tighten! Finally on to the brakes. Tighten the levers down enough to stay in place while riding and the check the lever securing bolts. Bleed the brakes if necessary.

Suspension
Keep an eye on how much travel you’re using throughout the day. If you’re not using enough then release some air pressure or back off your compression dampening. Bike park riding often requires slightly softer settings than you would ride on a trail. Give the seals a check and wipe any dust or mud of your stanchion and seals.

Drivetrain
Check cranks and pedals are on tight both sides of the bike. If you have chainring bolts then give them a once over. Check the rear mech is still tight on to the bike, that the rear mech hanger is tight and that the jockey wheel bolts are secure.

And thats the bike park safety check! It’s good to get into a habit of safety checking your bike if you’re riding bike park or not.

Bike parks are not only awesome fun, but an amazing place to develop your mountain biking skills. The exposure to different types of terrain and different styles of trails purpose built for different ability levels means that there is always something for riders of all levels to practice!

In order to build on your skills, you first need to establish them before riding a bikepark. You want to be able to ride a good amount of the features placed in front of you comfortably, just to have an enjoyable time riding! After that you can think of your riding progression. So here are our 5 basic skills that you should be able to do to ride in a bike park.

– Rock Rolls
Rock Rolls can be intimidating when you’re standing at the top looking down, but if you look at your exit, control your speed, stay relaxed and drop your heels, you’ll be absolutely fine!

– Berms
An essential part of bike park riding, look for your entry, control your speed and look for your exit…cornering is the easiest part of bike riding!

– Drops
A slightly more advanced skill, but a great one to have knowledge of. Practice in a skills area on small ladder drops, working your way up. Relax on the bike, drop your heels and shift your weight back.

– Jumps
There’s some work to be done before this one! Lower your saddle and maybe add a click or two of rebound on your rear suspension if you have it. Jumps is all about the compression of the bike and rider. Compress your body and bike on the take off and push off the lip, stay relaxed in the air and try to make the bike match the angle of the landing.

– North Shore
Riding North Shore is just a mental game. If it was a flat path or trail no one would have a problem riding between some cones would they? So why have an issue when you’re riding on a raised surface? Look a good distance ahead, keep your speed under control, keep some momentum and spot your exit!
