Making sure your bike is clean, lubed and greased is vital for ensuring longevity of your components – but it can be confusing with the amount of different lubes and greases out there.

Also, it can be confusing where you should be using grease; assembly compounds and thread locks. So here’s our guide to the different options out there, and where you should use them…

Depending on the level of bike maintenance you plan on doing, there are a few basics that everyone should have in their collection:

– Water Displacer
– Chain lube
– General spray lube
– Grease

Water displacer is ideal for use after a wet ride or following cleaning your bike; to drive out the water from small moving parts like the chain. It’s also ideal to use on things like the cleats on your shoes to stop them from rusting.

Chain lube is the best thing for your transmission. Pick one that suits the conditions you ride in – more on that in a minute though.

The spray lube can get lube in to places that chain lube can’t go – like brake lever pivots; and the mechanisms on clipless pedals. Although you can use spray lube on your chain, it’s thin viscosity means it won’t stay in place as well as a dedicate chain lube.

Grease is a necessary essential for helping keep water away from moving parts like bearings, and for use when assembling certain bike parts.

You don’t have to go out and buy a new bike to get your bike riding and looking new again. In this video, Doddy tells you exactly how you can do that on a budget. Tell us your mountain bike maintenance hacks down in the comments.

1. Changing your inner gear cables
Your inner gear cables can collect lots of crud, and they’re easy enough to change. Welcome to smooth, crisp shifting!

2. Give your shifters some TLC
On the smooth shifting note, your shifters can also hold lots of muck. You should be able to take your shifters apart give them a clean. A bit of spray grease will keep them smooth for many epic rides to come.

3. Apply threadlock to your loose bolts
Loose, rattling bolts that just won’t stay tight? Depending where they are, some non-locking threadlock (usually the blue threadlock) could be just the thing.

4. Lacquer your scuffs and scratches
Scuffs and scratches on your bike are part of mountain biking – you might even wear them with pride. But, left unchecked, you could be opening up your pride and joy to a bit of damage. Depending on your frame material and paint, some lacquer (or even clear nail varnish) will do the trick.

5. Lube your fork seals
Smoother suspension = bigger smiles?

6. Check your tyres over
Everyone hates punctures. You can’t make them a thing of the past, but you can make sure that they happen way less often just by making sure your tyres are in good condition.

7. Check for loose spokes, tighten and true
Over time, your spokes may work loose. With a spoke tool – which you’ll find on most good multitools – you can tighter them up as a temporary fix.

8. Apply grease or anti-seize where it counts
Seized bolts are not a mountain biker’s friend. Doddy tells you how and where to use the right products.

9. Degrease and lube your drivetrain
A clean drivetrain is one of the best ways to save money on constantly replacing your bike parts.

10. Check your chain for wear
A worn chain has a knock-on effect and can wear out all of the other component parts of your drivetrain. The chain is generally the cheapest part of the drivetrain, so you can save on the bigger items by replacing it when it’s worn.

Your chain goes through a tonne of stress from twisting over the gears and from the sheer power in your legs, so it’s not surprising that they occasionally snap! So here’s how to join your chain again, regardless of what type it is!

Here’s 3 ways to rejoin your chain. For this job you’ll need a chain tool, a third hand tool/bent spoke, a shimano joining pin, a master link and a pair of pliers. First off it’s the power link! These are handy as they allow you to snap together a chain quickly in the rain or in a race and are often cross brand compatible. These need two male ends of the chain, and clip together on opposite sides. Pull it tight until it locks together and away you go! The second method is the classic method using a proper chain splitting tool. Doddy likes one’s with two sets of jaws, one set for splitting the chain and the other for removing a stiff link. When removing your chain make sure that the pin you push out isn’t fully removed. Then locate the male end of the chain in the correct place and push the old pin back in with your chain tool. This method can leave the chain with a stiff link which can be remedied by using your chain tool on the second plate and applying a tiny bit of pressure to the driver to push the inside plate away slightly, freeing up the movement. The last method is to use a Shimano joining pin on a Shimano chain. Its much better to re-join a Shimano chain with a dedicated joining pin as it preserves material on the pin and will prove itself stronger for longer. To use the pin you need a male and female end of the chain, use your bent spoke to hold them together before driving the pin through with your chain tool. There will be a large section sticking out of the backside of the chain which needs to be carefully snapped off before you’re ready to ride!
