How To Clean Your Disc Brakes | Mountain Bike Maintenance

How To Clean Your Disc Brakes | Mountain Bike Maintenance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXQxLK6z5WA
Squeaky disc brakes are hated far and wide in every corner of the mountain bike community. There can be many reasons for a squeaky brake but the two most common causes are oil or some other contaminant making it’s way onto the pads and rotors and uneven ‚bedding in’ of brakes pads causing vibrations in the braking system. No matter which is the cause, your brakes are squealing and we want to stop that!

Follow the instructions in the video and your brakes will be screech free and squeaky clean in no time!

You don’t need tonnes of tools to carry out this job, just a few basics and some cleaning solutions! Here’s how to clean your disc brakes!

You may have heard of some pretty funky ways of cleaning disc rotors and pads. From baking them in an oven, to covering them with alcohol and burning them over a flame. Whilst we acknowledge that these methods exist, we cannot recommend you try them for obvious safety reasons. Stick with this way…It’s the original and the best!

We Should All Ride Hardtails | Dirt Shed Show Ep. 140

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuLHtWb8bAQ
It’s the Dirt Shed Show! This week we’re going back to basics and talking about whether we should all ride hardtails! It’s no secret that we love our full suspension trail bikes, but we also talk about how forgiving they are and how they can lead to sloppy skills! So is it worthwhile to switch back? What do you think?

Top 8 Mountain Bike Set Up Hacks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUtIgY6ozAs
From dialling in your lever position to customising your tyres, Blake, Doddy, and Neil have got some top hacks to improve your bike set up.

Subscribe to GMBN: http://gmbn.eu/subscribe

Shifter position is often overlooked part of setting up your bike. Have a think about where your thumbs will naturally rest when you are in your riding position.

Tall riders often find they cannot get there bars wide enough. To slightly extend your bar width, move your lock on grips so they extend a bit beyond the end of your bars.

To tidy your cockpit, use a spiral cable binder to tie two loose cables together. Alternatively, you can use a cable tie and a washer.

Especially useful in wet and muddy conditions, try adding some grip tape to your controls to stop your fingers slipping off.

Don’t be afraid to cut or file down certain parts of your tyres tread to get exactly the ride characteristics you want from them.

To stop your front brake hose rattling, use a cable tie and a washer to tie it to your fork. If you are running a front mudguard, this can also be a way to neatly mount it to your fork.

Front mudguards are quite easy to make yourself, alternatively you can get yourself a very smart GMBN one.

When setting the rebound on your rear shock, think about what sort of riding you tend to do. If you regularly hit big jumps, you might want to slow down the rebound to stop yourself getting bucked off on hard landings. Alternatively if you do a lot of downhill riding, you might want a faster rebound to ensure you keep traction on rough or Rooty sections of trail.

Do you have any set up hacks? Let us know what they are in the comments below 👇

How To Choose The Right Dropper Post For You

Dropper posts can make a huge difference to your riding, but there are a few things to take into consideration before buying one. Neil tells you how to make sure you only buy the dropper post that will fit both you and your bike.

Make sure you buy the correct diameter post for your bike
Check whether the post is routed internally or externally
Decide how much drop you want from your post.
An important measurement to take before buying your post is the stack height. That is the measurement from the top of the seat post collar to the saddle rails. Then subtract about 50mm for the dropper post collar and the saddle clamp. This measurement is the maximum length of dropper you can run.
Check the length you can insert the seat post into your frame before it hits an obstruction. For example, a bend in the tube, or the actual rear shock itself.
Ensure the dropper post won’t be further out from the frame than the minimum insertion mark.

Do you ride with a dropper post? Let us know in the comments down below 👇

Fabien Barel’s Canyon Strive CF | GMBN Pro Bikes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaSlqrOsKMg
2x Downhill World Champion Fabien Barel is famously in-tune with his bikes. For most riders, this just means that they’re picky about their set up, maybe even getting out the tape measure every now again. But for Fabien it’s different. He’s so in tune with what’s happening on the bike that a lot of his creative development and design input went in to actually designing the Strive. He’s riding the bike that he helped to design…how cool is that?

How To Safety Check A Retro Mountain Bike | GMBN Freak Week

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZFFm2i3mig
This beauty, is Doddy’s very retro Diamondback Sorento as used in GMBN’s ‚Weirder Rides’ Halloween special (http://gmbn.eu/WeirderRides). It’s complete with it’s original Tiger stripe paint job and Doddy like it so much he’s made it his new run-around! Pub bike, Beater, Clunker, Town bike…whatever you like to call them, this is how you safety check and maintain a retro mountain bike!

Mountain bike standards, engineering and materials have progressed a long way since the time of this Sorento and pretty much everything is different from your modern mountain bike!

With that in mind here are some checks to carry out before buying a second hand bike. A full safety check is essential before riding, but also highly advised before purchase if you want to be smart with your money! Once you’ve got one though, you’ll want to be sure to know how to maintain it!

Now get out there and have fun on it!

Top 8 Night Riding Mistakes | Mountain Bike Skills

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVo2QbUCqjE
In association with Exposure.

It’s as easy as riding a bike, right? Not at night it’s not! Riding at night is a challenging and unfamiliar environment to ride in. From going out alone to riding an unfamiliar trail, here are some of the mistakes that we’ve made over our time out at night!

Subscribe to GMBN: http://gmbn.eu/subscribe
GMBN Winter kit is available to Pre-Order now! There’s 20% off if you pre-order both the bib and jersey! Check them out here: http://gmbn.eu/yT

Night riding is great fun. It gives you a chance to look at the same trails you ride everyday in a different light (literally). It’s a great environment to work on reactive riding skills and adds a whole new dimension to your mountain biking experience!

Riding In Twilight
It’s not bright enough for your eyes and it’s not dark enough for your lights! Avoid riding at twilight!

Riding Alone
Trees and other obstacles come out of the darkness a lot quicker. Even if riding an incredibly familiar trail, we do not recommend riding alone at night.

Ride Somewhere Familiar
You shouldn’t attempt a trail or even a line you haven’t done before for the first time at night. Ride it during the day, become familiar with it, then hit it at night!

Getting Air
The landings of jumps can become a dark spot when getting airborne. If you’re unsure, get a friend to light your landing area with their lights before you take off!

Blinding Your Mates
A persons night vision can take a long time to adjust and will disappear straight away once a bright light is shined in their eyes. Try to avoid blinding both your riding mates and oncoming people or riders with your lights by dipping them on the settings, looking at their feet or to their side or altering the path of your beam with a hand.

Light Set Up
Not too far down, not too far forward. Somewhere in the middle so you can see what’s coming on trail is just right!

Shadows
If you ride right behind a mate with your lights on full beam, their vision will become obstructed by the shadow their body is throwing off of your lights! Not to mention the distraction of you right behind them! Back off and leave more room at night, especially as your mate could be more likely to crash!

Loose brackets
Always make sure your light mounting brackets are up to torque. Too tight and you risk damaging your bars, too loose and your light will be pointing straight down (or even worse behind you!) after a short section of bumpy trail.

How To Replace A Broken Spoke | Mountain Bike Maintenance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeqCkbwU9eE
Given the nature of mountain biking, broken spokes can happen from time to time. With a few tips from Doddy, you’ll be able to replace a broken spoke and re-true your wheel in no time.

Although it might seem daunting at first, replacing a spoke doesn’t have to be a very difficult job.

Doddy talks you through the process of replacing a spoke on your mountain bike wheel here:

First remove the tyre and rim tape, particularly if you are running a tubeless set up, and the cassette or disc rotor if it is a rear wheel.

Work out the length and type of spoke you need for your wheel.

Next remove the broken, or damaged, spoke.

Thread the new spoke nipple onto the replacement spoke, and then tighten to finger tightness.

Now using a spoke key, only tighten by a quarter turn on each spoke. Also don’t put too many turns on one spoke, you may need to slightly loosen the spokes on either side of the broken spoke to true the wheel properly.

Once you have got the wheel as true as possible, relieve the tension on the spokes by placing the wheel on a hard surface and leaning on the rim.

Let us know how you get on with replacing a spoke in the comments below 👇

Top 4 Skills To Know Before Riding At Night | Mountain Bike Skills

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I3LxaXCbLw
In association with Exposure.

Night riding is often a daunting idea for a many riders and it’s not all down to a fear of the dark! Neil and Doddy have got 4 basic tips that you need to know before tackling a trail at night.

Subscribe to GMBN: http://gmbn.eu/subscribe
Get Doddy’s Green Jersey in the GMBN store! http://gmbn.eu/yz

There are loads of things to think about on your average mountain bike ride. But that ride at night? There are new variables, risks and rewards to be gained from this different type of riding. Here’s what you need to know before getting stuck in!

Drops and Jumps
Don’t approach something new at night. Ride familiar trails with familiar features so that you’re aware of what’s coming up at you out of the darkness. Be wary of drops and jumps if you’re running a single light. Dark spots with no light on them are behind the take off and your lights hitting obstacles can cast shadows where you would normally be able to see.

Roots and Rocks
Again, riding with a single light can cast shadows on the trail ahead of you, especially when that light is on your bars. A helmet light looking down can hep with this, but still be wary of rocks or roots hiding in shadows. Take familiar lines or maybe consider hitting technical sections a bit slower than you would in the daytime.

Cornering
A single light on the handlebars focuses your attention on the centre of the corner, only illuminating more as you progress around it, leaving you riding reactively and predicting what’s next as you can’t see it. A secondary light on the helmet will allow you to illuminate round the corner simply by looking where you’re going. Therefore riding at night with a headlight can actually improve your skills!

Blind Spots
Beware of the blind spot directly underneath you! Stumps, rocks, roots and all other kinds of obstacles pass underneath you in the darkness. Be wary of their locations and think about coasting that little bit longer so you know you’re well clear of that stump before you pedal off. The biggest blind spot is off the side of the trail! Ignore it! If you’re staring into the darkness you’re not focused on looking at the trail.
